Radical Evangelism In God's Name
The Greatest Commandment
I would like to focus on the "Ten Commandments"
Exodus 20: 1-17 (NKJV)
1 And God spoke all these words, saying:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;
5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates.
11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery .
15 “You shall not steal .
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor .
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house ;
you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servan t, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.”
Theses commands from God are very specific. Though they are in the old testament and part of the old law, we still strongly follow and teach these fundamentals in our biblical teachings today. In Matthew 5:17 in the New Living Translation Jesus says...
"Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. (in other translations the wording is "I have come to fulfill the law")
“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:36-40 (NIV)
If we truly love our God, our neighbor and ourselves, then there is absolutely no reason what-so-ever that we should even want or need to commit any of the infractions from the Ten Commandments against anybody. And in the 1st book of Corinthians in the new testament "love" is explained thoroughly...
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV)
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
One of the greatest examples of love in the entire bible is found in John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (NKJV)
Wow! How awesome. God loved the world (that's everybody alive) so much HE GAVE ... In acts 20:35 the word says...
I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'”
Love is the key! Love is the answer! If we can simply just love all the people in our lives and around us (which does include forgiving them) and if we can love God and love ourselves, how can we go wrong in our journey walking with Christ?
